Boss Rush Banter: Is There Such Thing as “Too Much” Hype Before a Video Game Release?

It’s been a busy week so far. Many even considered it the E3 2022 that never was. In one week alone, we have witnessed the Ubisoft Forward, Nintendo Direct, Sony State of Play, and Tokyo Game Show. Many new games, updates, and ports were announced–one of which, another trailer for God of War: Ragnarok got me thinking. By this State of Play, there are four trailers available for this game. In this case, this final trailer hooked me, but I feel that we sometimes can find ourselves exhausted when we see titles pushed a little too hard. So, is there such thing as too much?

Again, God of War: Ragnarok was a positive example. It’s been four years since the previous game, and plenty of time has passed between trailers. However, I recall how much Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy by Eidos-Montreal was flaunted up until release. There were trailers and promotions at what seemed like every showcase. The incessant exposure almost was a turn off and came off as desperate.

A more recent example is Sonic Frontiers. Sonic fever has taken hold after the success of the movies, and while the open-world concept of a Sonic game is fresh and exciting (or scary depending on your perspective), I felt like I’ve seen trailers or promotions everywhere I turned. It’s almost like alert fatigue where if I see another Sonic Frontier headline, I sadly tune it out. I also seen promotions and trailers for Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope at both the Nintendo Direct and the Ubisoft Forward, which were two days apart. I’m still buying it day one, but I’ve tuned out whenever I see it appear on a stream now.

Ultimately, I believe it depends on the time in between promotions and trailers as well as the variety of content. If it is a slow trickle of different things, it could whet my appetite for more like God of War: Ragnarok.
