Final Fantasy VII fans may have to wait a long time before more spin-off remakes are brought forward.
Tetsuya Nomura, character designer for numerous Final Fantasy games, recently confirmed there are no plans for a remake/remaster of Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII and Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII.
Nomura, speaking to Korean publication Rullweb, said it did not make sense to remaster Dirge of Cerberus prior to the Final Fantasy VII remakes as it is set three years after those events. Nomura cited a lack of “overseas demand” as why there are no plans for a Before Crisis remake.
Nomura has previously said there were no plans for either remake earlier this year.
Dirge of Cerberus was a 2006 third-person shooter released in major markets. This game centered on Vincent Valentine, who was a party member in the original game.
Before Crisis was a 2004 mobile game that only released in Japan. It was a prequel to the original game, centering on the Turks and their adventures. Services officially stopped for the game in 2018 with no other means to access it.
Both games will be part of the upcoming mobile game Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis, which plans to reimagine parts of the FFVII timeline.
Nomura’s comments come as Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion is slated to release on Dec. 13. This is a remaster of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, which debuted on the PlayStation Portable in 2007.
Its release was part of a 25th anniversary celebration of Final Fantasy VII, which originally released for the PlayStation in 1997. As part of the celebration, Square Enix made numerous announcements regarding the game’s remake and other spin-off titles.
Crisis Core follows SOLDIER member Zack Fair and leads up to the events of Final Fantasy VII.
I don’t know much about Before Crisis so it would’ve been nice to have gotten a remaster of it to see what it is all about. That said, there appears to be some work involved with getting an almost 20-year-old mobile game up and running.
There’s always intrigue when it comes to games that didn’t receive a Western release and the fact that it is a Final Fantasy VII spinoff further compounds that interest.
If Square Enix is using Western demand as its measuring stick on whether we should get a remastered title, then we’ll likely be waiting a long time.
