Boss Rush Banter: Who is Your Video Game Valentine This Year?

Some adore Valentine’s Day while others think it’s a corporate excuse to make money. Single or coupled, no one can really escape this lovey-dovey holiday though. Pink and red decor line store aisles, and every retailer is shoving flowers and chocolates in your face. Want to dine out? Forget it, unless you made reservations weeks in advance. Much in the same vein as sharing our celebrity crushes, I’d like to celebrate Valentine’s Day 2023 talking about any video game crushes! Who would be yours?

It’s easy (and fun) to have a video game crush, and unless it turns into an unhealthy obsession (waifu, husbando territory and beyond), it’s harmless. And what’s not to like? In the modern day of gaming, we also have the advantage of high fidelity graphics.

Some common video game crushes that would make a great Valentine include those in the Resident Evil franchise like Leon Kennedy and our favorite big lady, Lady Dimitrescu. Fire Emblem characters like Byleth also have a charm to them, and you build a relationship (literally) with them in Fire Emblem: Three Houses. I personally have the hots for Joel from The Last of Us, but a recent Nintendo Direct has changed my mind.

Well, does that really surprise you? I am an absolute Zelda nut and had crushes on Link since he grew up in Ocarina of Time. However, I am not trying to be cliche. He wasn’t my contender as my 2023 “Valentine” until I saw official artwork for Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. In this character art, Link has a wild side to him, and he is filled with confidence as usual.

Now, it’s not all about looks for me. He is a glutton for food, as am I, and I think our perfect Valentine’s date would be a picnic outdoors somewhere in Hyrule. I wouldn’t even mind cooking myself, especially if I could hear that nice little jingle.
