Sony Highlights Third-Party, PS VR2 Titles During State of Play

5–7 minutes

Sony kicked-off 2023 with a State of Play broadcast that featured numerous trailers and an extended look at Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

The broadcast, which featured a significant amount of trailers, aired on Feb. 23. Along with Suicide Square: Kill the Justice League, other trailers centered on a Resident Evil 4 remake, Baldur’s Gate 3, a host of PS VR2 games, and new characters for Street Fighter 6.

Sony focused its presentation on third-party titles with Capcom, Bandai Namco, and Rocksteady, among others, all taking center stage during the stream. Here’s a rundown of the announcements:

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League Extended Look

Sony dedicated the biggest chunk of the stream to Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which is set in the Arkham universe. This showcase lasted about 15 minutes and included a lengthy gameplay trailer as well as the developers chatting about the game.

It also provided a good look at the game’s story, which is set in Metropolis after Brainiac brainwashes the Justice League. The Suicide Squad — which consists of Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, and King Shark — must infiltrate the city to stop the Justice League.

The game is set to release on May 26. It will require an Internet connection for both single-player and co-op play.

Resident Evil 4 Remake Trailer

Resident Evil 4 follows Capcom’s tradition of remaking Resident Evil games. This remake will be of the 2005 title of the same name.

The third trailer for the remake centered on Agent Leon S. Kennedy, showcasing him in various situations and scenes. It also featured other characters such as Jack Krauser, Ashley Graham, and many others.

The game is slated for a March 24 release on both the PlayStation 4 and 5. The trailer advertised a special demo that will arrive soon.  There is also a Mercenaries Mode that will be part of a free post-launch downloadable content pack.

Five Titles in the Works for PlayStation VR2

Sony led-off its stream with the presentation of five games coming to the PS VR2 library later this year. These titles included The Foglands, Green Hell VR, Synapse, Journey to Foundation, and Before Your Eyes.

The Foglands is an “atmospheric Western sci-fi roguelike,” according to Sony, where players explore the dangers of the surrounding fog and its many inhabitants. Green Hell VR allows players to control anthropologist Jake Higgins as he wanders the Amazon Rainforest in search of civilization.

Synapse is a first-person shooter that also allows players to use telekinetic powers in their combat. Journey to Foundation is a mystery game that allows players to investigate civil unrest at the edge of the galaxy.

Before Your Eyes is a narrative-driven game that allows players to live vicariously through the protagonist as they relive their life after they have just died. This game is slated for a March 10 release.

PS Plus March Additions Announced

Sony announced its additions to the various PS Plus tiers for March. It kicked off this reveal with the addition of Battlefield 2042, Minecraft Dungeons, and Code Vein as the monthly games for all three tiers.

Sony also announced the addition of Rainbow Six Extraction, Immortals Fenyx Rising, Tchia, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection to the Game Catalog on the Extra and Premium tiers.

Tchia is an open-world sandbox adventure from indie developer Awaceb. It focuses on Tchia, a young girl living on New Caledonia, a French territory just east of Australia. The developers patterned the game’s world after the island where they reside.

Tchia will be a day-one release on PS Plus on the Extra and Premium tiers. The game is set to release on March 21 on both the PlayStation 4 and 5.

Street Fighter 6 Adds Three Characters

Capcom announced the addition of Cammy, Lily, and Zangief to Street Fighter 6. The trailer showcased each fighter and their skills.

Zangief is a wrestler who debuted in Street Fighter 2 and uses primarily grappling moves. Lily is a new character who is the descendent of the Thunderfoot Tribe and uses two war clubs in combat.

Cammy is a British special forces unit Delta Red who originally debuted in Super Street Fighter 2 and uses a variety of weapons in combat.

The addition of these three characters marks the end of the roster as the game nears its June 2 release date.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Trailer

Larian Studios shared its first look at gameplay for Baldur’s Gate 3, which is set to release on Aug. 31 on the PlayStation 5. The trailer for the role-playing game provided glimpses of the story, the world, and the gameplay.
