New TMNT Game Based The Highly-Praised Comic Series The Last Ronin is in the Works

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles brand has been a staple of pop culture since the mid-eighties beginning with the comic book series by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird that spawned multiple TV shows, movies, toys, and of course, video games, ranging from excellent to less-than-mediocre. The Heroes in a Half Shell are seem to be enjoying another resurgence over the last year or so, with a great new comic run, a stellar 2D brawler in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge, the rerelease of classic titles in the Cowabunga Collection, and a new animated movie to be released in 2023 entitled Mutant Mayhem by Seth Rogan.

Over the last two years or so, IDW has also published the critical darling The Last Ronin, a story where all but one turtle and Splinter are dead with our remaining hero (no spoilers) seeking justice for the family he lost, wearing the black mask and fighting with all four brothers’ weapons and styles. It was written by both series creators Eastman and Laird as well as Tom Waltz and Andy Kuhn with art by Ben Bates, known best for his work on Sonic The Hedgehog from Archie Comics. The run was written with older fans in mind with it’s mature themes and dark tone.

News broke today from Paramount Global Senior Vice President for Games and Emerging Media, Doug Rosen, that a video game based on the graphic novel is in the works with inspiration from modern third-person action-RPGs, mentioning 2018’s God of War from Sony Santa Monica by name specifically. The Last Ronin game will remain in-line with it’s comic counterpart, intended for mature audiences and staying true to the source material’s story and dark tones.

This is the second AAA TMNT video game in the works known, including an untitled game scheduled for release later this year, along with “other TMNT projects in the works.” It is worth noting that The Last Ronin is still a “couple years away,” but nevertheless exciting.

The Last Ronin graphic novel is available now in either a hardback compendium or five separate issues. What do you think of a video game based on this series? Let us know in the comments, in our Facebook group, or in our Community Discord.
