A Serious Dracula Returns to the Screen in Universal Pictures’ The Last Voyage of the Demeter

Universal Pictures released a trailer for The Last Voyage of the Demeter, the latest installment in their (increasingly loose) Dracula series that began in 1931 with Todd Browning’s Dracula. Directed by André Øvredal and (primarily) written by Bragi F. Schut and Zak Olkewicz, the film is set to release August 11, 2023.

The film stars Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, David Dastmalchian, and Javier Botet as Dracula.

Based on a chapter from Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, the film takes place entirely on the boat which brought Dracula to England. While often excised from adaptations, this chapter made for one of the most famous sequences from F. W. Murnau’s Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror (1922). Given the design of Dracula in The Last Voyage of the Demeter, it seems Nosferatu is a clear inspiration.
