How To Share Your Photos Safely by Removing Metadata

One of the joys of being a collector, or just being into geeky pursuits, is sharing your experiences or dragon’s hoard with others. One of the best ways to do that is with a photo you took on your phone’s camera, shared directly online.

But hold on! There is metadata on every photo you take—and depending on your permissions, model, and carrier—that metadata will have everything from specific details about your phone and history down to the precise coordinates at which you took that photo.

The best way to protect yourself from anyone who might misuse that information? Remove it.

The following is geared toward Windows, and will work on most versions of Microsoft’s operating system.

Right click on the image you want to share.
Select “Properties” from the drop-down list.
Click on “Details.” There will be a number of tabs will be on the top of the window, and “Details” will be third in the row.
At the bottom, click on “Remove Properties and Personal Information.” The wording on this option may vary with your Windows version.
Select “Create a copy with all possible properties removed.” This will make a new image which is clean of any identifying metadata.
