After an extended hiatus, we are seeing the return of primetime television. CBS is the first network to return, launching their Premiere Week directly after Super Bowl LVIII.
The rest of the major networks will make their return in March.
One of the premieres that I’m most interested in is the return of 9-1-1. This procedural made the move from FOX to ABC. What’s interesting about this arrangement is that both networks are owned by Disney.
One thing that is interesting is that it is taking the timeslot of Station 19. That is moving to the 10pm slot for its final season with Grey’s Anatomy in the middle at 9pm. That marks a stark change from the format the two shows have had in recent seasons.
While not unheard of, there is little precedence for this move. In recent years, two notable cases have been Lucifer and Designated Survivor. Both made the jump from broadcast to Netflix.
Another notable occurrence was Manifest.
But moving from a broadcast network to a streamer is different from moving from Broadcast to Broadcast.
I have concerns about the network switch but those came when I saw the time slot. I’m worried about the tone of 9-1-1 with them putting it on Thursdays. The Shondaland shows are known for being prime-time soap operas.
9-1-1 has a vastly different tone and focuses both on the characters as well as the rescues they do. While there is drama, it’s more centered on how the firehouse is a family.
It’s a show I’ve loved since its first season and I’m terrified that because it’s on the same night as the Shondaland shows that they’ll change the tone to match that.
Despite its flaws, 9-1-1 is one of the more solid and original shows left on broadcast television. With a close cast of characters and intriguing storylines, I hope that this trip to ABC is a chance for their story to continue as it was.
