We’re about two weeks away from Invincible returning and the overanalyzing has already begun.
It’s no secret that I have loved this series, and I believe it is among the very best in the superhero genre currently airing. My only slight with the show is the waiting game that comes with it.
This usually means long waits between seasons with even some waits in the middle of a season (looking at you season 2). Once the show arrives, I am thrilled for the short time it is here.
Season 3 will be no different as the show returns with eight episodes with the first three debuting on Feb. 6 as part of a mega-sized premiere. As good as a bloated premiere is, there are some drawbacks.
Airing the first three episodes on day one means the season will air over six weeks rather than eight. Sure, two weeks might not seem like much but it still is added time we could have looking forward to more Invincible.
First, let’s stay positive. This is a good approach and one that outpaces Disney that follows the six-episode format but only airs one episode to start. At least with Invincible, you’re getting enough content to last you a bit so on that end, it pays off.
The longer premiere also helps shake the rust from being gone for so long. Season 2 ended last April, which was about 10 months ago. Having a longer premier can help catch viewers back up quickly rather than losing them.
Invincible always seems to be aware of its viewer, a fact laid out nicely in its original season 3 teaser trailer. There appears to be a lot of effort put into the show, an effort that pays off with a quality production.
I am willing to keep waiting if it means producers churn out quality episodes. That’s why I’m OK if the show is only around for six weeks at a time.
Let’s flip to the negative for a bit. Admittedly, the drawback to a larger premier is selfish: I don’t like waiting.
Again, I fully appreciate what the animators do for this show and how well it turns out. It is because of that fact that I want more.
I think most people are willing to wait but there might be some who won’t. While I’m sure the animators aren’t so concerned about that, it is a potential drawback to this format.
That said, what Invincible has going is working well. It followed this format in season 1 and that was the batch that hooked audiences. Clearly, the audience was OK with this approach because it has stuck around.
Furthermore, taking a shorter season length is much more preferred to a months-long midseason break the show did last season.
Invincible is back and it is special. Part of what makes that the case is we haven’t become overexposed to it. We are in a good spot where I would still like to see a bit more output.
That said, I would rather Invincible keep the course instead of sacrifice quality for quantity. In that sense, stay right where you are Invincible, I’m happy to wait.
