Have you ever scrolled through social media and came across fan art, video edits, or a simple post about a character that made you want to learn more about them? If your answer is yes, then you’re not alone.
For years, fan creations have been a vital part of drawing in new fans to a franchise. It doesn’t even have to be an elaborate masterpiece either. A joke is enough to get me curious enough to consume media. I simply want to be in on what others are laughing about or creating.
Would you believe me if I said this video of Roman Roy from HBO’s Succession is what caused me to watch it?
For a few weeks, that same clip of Roman looking at his computer notifications was captioned with all different types of hilarious situations, and I wanted to know the context so I started watching the show.
Memes aside, let’s not forget about TikTok’s impact on just about everything. The amount of friends that ran to Call of Duty because of the rise of edits happening of the character Simon “Ghost” Riley was too many to count and some have never picked up an FPS game in their lives before.
The edit above has over 1 million views and over 600,000 likes, and that’s not the only one that brings in crazy amount of numbers. To convince you further of the sheer power of video edits, there is one single post that caused me to not only become a fan of a band, but also convinced me to play Baldur’s Gate 3.
Like a moth to a flame, one Astarion video appearing on my feed is what took me to the Baldur’s Gate 3 Steam page. I learned that the song featured is called “The Summoning” by Sleep Token, and I haven’t stopped listening to it since. With more than 300 hours into Baldur’s Gate 3 and plenty of Sleep Token songs now added to my playlist, I can confidently say that one post introduced me to two different forms of media in a few seconds.
