Toge Productions from Indonesia is known for their hit cozy titles such as Coffee Talk and A Space for the Unbound. What you might not know is that they are branching out into other genres, such as tactical RPGs.
Game Overview
Kriegsfront Tactics is a tactical mech-based role-playing game. The game takes place in 1970’s Southeast Asia where you are a mecha squad commander taking missions behind enemy lines. The demo doesn’t go into the story, but Toge promises that it will have a cast of multiple characters, each with their own unique stats.

Reactions to the Game Demo
The demo showcased two missions. I played the first option. Your squad is assigned to reconnaissance of the enemy territory. Your squad of four mechas, each with their own build, moves on a grid, and the further you move forward, the more the fog of war gets lifted. Eventually, you’ll run into enemy mechas and engage in tactical combat. The goal is to find and destroy all the enemies’ mechas on the map. Your attack will hit one or several of the four parts on the mech’s body, very similar to Front Mission. When the “body” gets destroyed, the mech is destroyed.
A lot of this combat follows the same rules and results of the Front Mission series, but Toge added some additional twists. One of those twists is an AP system. Your mechas have AP that is expended whenever you move or do an action. Moving costs only 1 AP, but an attack could take 2-5 AP. What makes this tactical is that you could be up close to an enemy and attack multiple times, instead of once. You also have ammo that will need to be reloaded after a few turns, and that reload will cost you a turn in itself.
Toge Productions told me that the final product will have customizable mechas. You’ll be able to switch out parts to make your mecha stronger. While the game does not have a release date yet, you have an opportunity to play a demo on Steam as well as a companion game called Kriegsfront Battlescaper. In Battlescaper, you can customize your own mechs as well as the battlefield.
I had a lot of fun with Kriegsfront Tactics, and it exceeded my expectations. I expected something like Front Mission, but I got a little more with the additional tweaks to the combat. While the demo didn’t have a story, given Toge’s track record for amazing story telling, I trust that they will not disappoint.
