Introduction

Goliath Depot is a 2D arcade platformer housed in an 80’s throwback vibe.

Synopsis

Traverse across 4 worlds with 10 stages a piece, on a journey, to inform your boss about the corrupt products that have surfaced.

Analysis

Navigate the stages to slam doors and windows to prevent the corrupt packages from leaving the facility and reaching customers. Then take on the bosses that mean business in each location.

The gameplay

Begin the game by selecting from one or two player mode. Once selected you can pick your character with others to unlock by completing various stages or tasks in the game. While in game you will collect coins, they can be used to give you another life or purchase powerups to use in your session. Once all these things are selected you will start level one, stage one at the factory.

Each level consists of 10 stages. In these stages you will find various enemies, traps, and mechanisms that you must avoid or master to close all the windows and doors to move on. You will finally reach the last stage in which you will encounter a boss battle.

The first levels boss, which is best described as a boxing box, was a fun way to test the skills you have been perfecting up to that point. Try to take down the boss’s health bar before your hearts deplete and if you have enough coins that you collected throughout the levels you can revive yourself and continue the fight.

As you progress through stages you will find new and harder enemy types and gimmicks to make you keep fine tuning your speed to close the doors. You are timed so that forces you to not stand still so you must balance your life meter, the coins you collect, and your method in which you try and complete a stage.

Every time you complete a level you earn the coins you have at the time of that completion. This will allow you to buy powerups before playing the next level. Some examples of power ups are speed, double jump, and my personal favorite a hang glider. You can purchase any or all of them but can only apply one at any given time.

Each stage was easy to understand but sometimes not so easy to navigate when you try and complete it as fast as you can. In the menu they have speed run modes which allows you to play in that style. I can see some people really enjoying that take on the game. Other modes are offered such as 1985 Arcade-Mode, which asks you to complete all the levels in one sitting. At least you won’t have to insert quarters here.

Final Score:

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Goliath Depot: is a fun arcade platformer with a speed run emphasis to craft your skills. The addition of being able to purchase a power up and use it to get through a difficult spot is great for strategy. Navigating through each level as you advance through the stages is a nice bite size way to approach the level design to accommodate for both the short burst of time players and the perfectionist style of players.

The game is easy to get into, the controls are comfortable, and the transition between levels is quick and responsive. The music is catchy and lends great rhythm as you try and coordinate your jumps and door slams to the beat.

The overall feel I had playing this game comes down too fun and gameplay. Much like a Nintendo game that usually goes for these attributes and leaves a minimal storyline to follow works well here. The story isn’t any mind-blowing affair, but it holds together the experience the developers wanted you to take away from it.

For an arcade-based platformer this is a very fine experience. If you excel in speed-running or high-scores you will love this game. I tend to enjoy all aspects of a game, and this hits all the things I enjoy, not too the max, but you will enjoy what is offered in the title.
