So, why are we talking about a game that hasn’t been announced yet? Well, there is a rumor surrounding the next entry in Capcom’s Resident Evil series as leaked by an alleged play tester. While we at Boss Rush always treat rumors with kid gloves and lots of salt, it does provide opportunity for discussion. What are your predictions and/or hopes for Resident Evil IX if and when it gets announced?
Okay, first, let’s look at what is mentioned in the rumor (I provided a high-level summary below, but feel free to reference the Tweet for more):
- Main protagonists are Jill Valentine and Leon Kennedy with Barry and Chris Redfield as supporting characters.
- Takes place four years after Resident Evil VIII
- You will explore the origins of the Megamycete on some island
- Rosemary Winters will likely have some involvement with a vaccine
This rumor listed several things I was already hoping and prediction. Firstly, I personally was hoping for the return of Leon and/or Jill. Both are beloved characters in the franchise, and the allowance of two playable characters would allow for different experiences–like with Resident Evil 2 remake with Leon and Claire.
I also agree with the prediction that it follows the events of Resident Evil VII and VIII, given Capcom’s history of batching the franchise in threes.
While the last two mainline games were done in a first-person perspective, I hope for a return to third-person over the shoulder, although I would understand keeping first-person for consistency. I also hope for more unique enemy types. Although zombies sit at the root of the franchise’s identity, Resident Evil VIII kept things fresh with more “out-there” with Lycans and vampires.
Finally, I do hope for cohesion in the story that does involve the Winters family. Ethan Winters and his daughter were captivating new characters in Resident Evil VIII, and I would love to see any of the Winters’ involvement in IX.
