The 2024 Bossies, the second annual presentation of the awards, has its nominees for Best Game By a Solo Developer.
The Bossies is an award show the Boss Rush Network hosts that is a celebration of video games and entertainment. The event is not beholden to announcements and trailers, rather votes come directly from the community.
The award show aims to feature games and entertainment that deserves recognition as the Boss Rush team highlights the best of the year, including content the industry may have overlooked.
Furthermore, the Boss Rush team has partnered many from around the industry who are big fans of gaming and entertainment. These include Indie developers, game publishers, and content creators.
The 2024 Bossies nominations for Best Game By a Solo Developer are:
Animal Well by Billy Basso and Shared Memory, LLC: Players take control of a blob to explore a labyrinth filled with animals in this Metroidvania. Developer Billy Basso created the game as a hobby in 2017 before turning his attention to it full-time in 2022. It draws inspiration for survival horror games, Super Mario Bros. 2 and 3, The Witness, Tunic, and Fez.
Astlibra Revisions by Keizo: This side-scrolling RPG follows an unnamed protagonist who flees a host of demons attacking their hometown before finding themselves in the uninhabited Frontier lands. They meet Karon and set off on a journey. The game originally released in 2023 but made its debut on the Switch in 2024 along with DLC.
Farewell North by Kyle Banks and Mooneye Studios: Players seek to restore color to a darkened archipelago. This open-world adventure centers on the theme of saying goodbye as the protagonist ventures alongside their collie companion. The game started out as a hobby for the developer before hunkering down on the game during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Crypt Custodian by Kyle Thompson: This Metroidvania follows Pluto the cat after they’ve died and reached the afterlife palace. A subsequent banishing leaves Pluto cleaning the palace grounds that feature beasts, upgrades, secrets, and puzzles. This is the only game from Kyle Thompson, which released in mid 2024.
Balatro by LocalThunk: This roguelike, deck-building game draws inspiration from poker to create its unique gameplay. Players utilize poker hands for scoring points and defeating blinds. They can improve their decks and purchase joker cards that provide a bevy of effects. An anonymous single developer created the game.
While voting has closed for the 2024 Bossies, you can still tune in on Thursday, Jan. 16 to see which game from a solo developer takes home the award. The event starts at 8:30 p.m. EST with a pre-show while the main event begins at 9 p.m. EST. Catch the event on YouTube.
