Boss Rush Banter: What is Your Go-To Build in Slay the Spire?

Another game I finally got around to playing this year is Slay the Spire. This deck building roguelike released in 2019, but it sat in my backlog for a long time. When a sequel was recently announced, I knew I had to get on that. After several runs, I wanted to ask everyone that has played Slay the Spire–what is your go-to build?

The characters you can play as are the Ironclad, the Silent, the Defect, and the Watcher. As you can imagine, each have their own specialty and set of cards. The Ironclad focuses on brute force attacks and balancing it with defense. The Silent relies more in shivs and/or status effects. The Defect is an automaton that utilizes orbs to channel additional attacks or buffs. And finally, the last unlocked character, the Watcher, revolves around her different stances.

When you begin the game, you start with only the Ironclad. It would seem like he is the most well-rounded, and therefore the easiest to use. I ended up with a more successful (and enjoyable) runs as the Silent. Although she doesn’t start off very strong, I’ve come to appreciate the other support and status effect cards.

My most successful build focused on poisoning the enemy. In addition to the damage enemies take every turn, I can also maximize Bane, which doubles the damage if an enemy is poisoned. There were also many support cards that helped me strike first, draw more cards, and have more energy on my next turn. This is how I got through my first successful run.

A lightning orb focused build with the Defect is a close second of mine. It took a while to master the Defect’s deck, but once I focused more on the late-game, I was able to accumulate offensive (and some defensive) orbs that would accumulate and pay off by the end when it counted the most.

What were some of your most successful deck builds in Slay the Spire? Are you looking forward to the sequel? Please share your thoughts with us on our Boss Rush Facebook Group or our Boss Rush Discord.
