Boss Rush Banter: Is Nintendo Undergoing a Massive Revamp to Secure the Next Generation of Gamers?

It may be easy to scoff at the title of this banter because what video game business wouldn’t be hard at work to gain and retain a fan base but hear me out. Nintendo has been an impressive titan in the industry, thanks to their tightly run business practices, exclusive and beloved franchises, and innovative practices. However, the post-Iwata Nintendo has made some new moves proving that they want to make sure that they don’t hang their hats purely on the nostalgia factor. The 80s kids are getting older, and Gen Z and Alpha seems to be enraptured by the likes of Minecraft, Fortnite, and Roblox. How does Nintendo stay relevant?
Nintendo announced the Super Mario Bros. Movie back in 2018 that released in theaters in 2023. Nintendo also opened their first Super Nintendo World in Japan back in 2021, then followed up with the first North American location at Universal Studios, Los Angeles in 2023. A Super Nintendo World in Florida subsequently opened earlier this year, and it included a Donkey Kong expansion. From these, we’ve also seen Nintendo franchise characters get a face-lift from Princess Peach Showtime‘s Peach looking like the movie iteration to the new Donkey Kong Bananza. The Donkey Kong difference is stark, and the new version clearly is taken from the Super Mario Bros. Movie, albeit without Seth Rogan’s voice. To tie a pretty now on top of this, Universal Studios confirmed that a Donkey Kong movie is in the works. Oh wait, we also just recieved news on the casted roles for Zelda and Link in the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie.
I’ve seen a mostly positive reception in my circles, but as an 80s baby, the changes are difficult to ignore. Why change something that has been working for them? In a June 2025 Shareholder Meeting, Nintendo President Furukawa was quoted the following:
“Under our strategy of ‘expanding the number of people who have access to Nintendo IP’ to continuously invigorate our core integrated hardware-software business, we have been working on initiatives beyond our dedicated video game platforms for several years. Visual content is one such area. And rather than simply licensing our IP to film production companies, we are taking a proactive approach where Nintendo itself is deeply involved in production and makes investments as needed…Although we cannot discuss our plans beyond The Legend of Zelda movie at this time, we are working on various other projects.” -Shuntaro Furukawa
The leadership following Iwata leans more conservatively with their hardware innovations while focusing on expanding their current reach with visual media. In one way, it can be interpreted as “less risky” (avoiding a Wii U repeat) and avoiding putting all their eggs into one basket. With the clear success with Super Nintendo World and the Super Mario Bros. Movie, it makes sense to further their reach, including to the new generation of gamers. Nintendo, while historically gun-shy about expanding into other visual media, all of a sudden we are putting voices and new faces to beloved characters.

Another reason why I’m getting granular is because I’ve noticed a big advertising push since the launch of the Switch 2, a push that I have not seen at this scale since 2017. Nintendo generally wouldn’t “need” to advertise their first-party IP, as their reputation alone would sell gangbusters. However, take a moment and see how much have you seen Donkey Kong Banaza in your feeds–or if you’re following Nintendo’s Showcases and trailers, you can clock their significant efforts to promote the game. Nintendo held a Bananza-specific direct back in June, then released a hefty 8-minutes trailer a couple release prior to launch.
So, why all this? My generation and older already are familiar with DK and the Nintendo gang. These changes and push would seem to service newer, younger potential gamers in addition to feeding our nostalgia. For example, Gen Alpha are those born between 2010 and 2025. They were born into the seventh generation of consoles, which was the Wii for Nintendo. They missed out on the epic platforming revolution that was Mario 64. They likely missed Super Mario Galaxy and maybe were exposed to Super Mario 3D World, but most likely, Super Mario Odessey. And what about our banana-loving friend? We haven’t seen a true 3D Donkey Kong since Donkey Kong 64 in 1999. As for the Zelda franchise, Gen Alpha has only been around since the Skyward Sword days, although their first true experience may have been Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. When you look at the timelines and align them with the latest generation, it only makes sense for Nintendo to perform some facelifts, revamps, and more.
All of this is neither a good thing or bad thing; however, it is an interesting observation of Nintendo’s adjustment in vision and trying to rationalize these changes. Their mascots like Mario, Donkey Kong, and Link haven’t really changed for so long, but sometimes, change must occur to keep the passion of good games alive.
