Recently a friend of mine purchased a Nintendo Switch 2. He had plenty of questions for me surrounding the accounts and transferring saves and games to retain progress. After much discussion he asked if Nintendo had an app to look at the store and I said I believe they do. While searching I found not only that application but plenty more. The question I have is why?
I had a few applications from Nintendo on my phone already, but when I was searching with my friend it just seemed odd that so many different options were available. I am not including any of the game applications, but five main applications are my focus. These include the Nintendo Switch App, Switch Parental App, Nintendo Store App, Nintendo Music App, and Nintendo Today App. I have all of them grouped into my phone so I can access them when I need to, but for some reason I’m scratching my head thinking to myself this is unnecessary.
As part of my job, I have regression tested apps and analyzed functionality. I can safely say the quality of the Nintendo applications are good quality. When an app is developed sometimes, they give the app a test trial with a group of people and the main thing that I have noticed is that everyone wants mainly ease of use and convenience. Nintendo has checked off one of the two and plenty of room for improvement is necessary.
My recommendation for short-term is to create a hub app that has all these apps accessible and you can go there to get what you need. The long-term would be a new application that incorporates all 5 applications’ best qualities and combines them with some new ideas and create an all-in-one. If you had multiple groups or teams develop these in various ways in different locations, I believe having a main group create it under one roof in unison would greatly help with quicker development times and troubleshooting capabilities. Nintendo could have a bigger team to tackle this issue.
Can the future of applications under Nintendo be more contained or will the drip feed application reign supreme? Will Nintendo also bring certain applications to the Nintendo Switch family such as the music app? What ideas or improvements do you think Nintendo needs to be successful in this area? Let us know your thoughts.
