How many apps are one too many? There is an app for everything, and Nintendo has plenty. While this gaming juggernaut is renowned for its innovation and pristine gameplay, they’ve also held a reputation for lagging behind in state-of-the-art technology. With the Nintendo Switch App, Nintendo Music, Nintendo Today!, and Nintendo Switch Parental Controls, does Nintendo have way too many apps?
Nintendo launched Nintendo Today! March 28th, 2025, adding it to its list of already available apps on smart phones. Nintendo Today! is a means to deliver news and announcements direct to the consumer. It started off with a bang by dropping the Zelda movie release date; however, Nintendo Today! has lost a little steam over the months. This is just one of four Nintendo apps, and that doesn’t include their two mobile games: Mario Kart Tour and Super Mario Run. As of June 2nd, 2025, Nintendo Today! has a 4.3 rating on the Apple app store, indicating a baseline satisfaction with some feedback. Here are two such reviews found in the Apple app store:
“Nintendo Today! is a great concept, but only remains that way as Nintendo fails to represent any meaningful content in their app…For example, information as simple as the pre-order date of the Switch 2 and the price were completely omitted…That isn’t even going into the questionable UI where you have to continuously scroll down to get the information you want rather than organizing what you want to read by type. This is a shame because they started off so promising by revealing the Zelda movie date, but ever since then, there has been a noticeable absence of truly substantial information.” -The Awesome Chap
“I like the concept of sending out news for Nintendo fans and fun little trivia bites. However, I have notifications turned on in my phone settings and in the in-app settings and have yet to receive a single one after having the app for a few weeks now. Also, the videos and content can be a bit laggy at times, and there is little incentive to actually visit the app daily.” -StarGameFun!
The other apps include the Nintendo Switch app where you can check your friends’ online status, use voice chat, view your screenshots and videos, add friends, and access game-specific services. There is a separate app for Parental Controls as well as streaming Nintendo music. With that said, I personally could not see why news from the Nintendo Today! app couldn’t be funneled through the existing Nintendo Switch app, especially when you don’t need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to use the current news app.
As a huge Nintendo fan, even I find all these apps clunky. It doesn’t make much sense that I need to toggle through several apps to access a single company’s services. One Nintendo app could house parental controls, various content such as music and game-specific services. While I can understand these apps were added over a long period of time, there’s no efficiency to running several apps. It is inefficient to both the company but also the customer, and it would behoove Nintendo to focus on quality over quantity. Below are a few reviews from the Apple app store for the Nintendo Switch app, which currently only has three stars:
“I play Animal Crossing very regularly, and something that was brought to my attention was data usage in terms of the app. When you go into Nooklink, it’s supposed to show your player data and profile; however, if you have reset, deleted, or otherwise wiped your island…that previous character will be stuck as a selection for good.” – EquinoX II
“When this application was announced years ago, I downloaded it and barely used it. Ended up deleting it within that week. Never saw the use of it. This could’ve been Nintendo’s way of learning how to better the online system for the sequel console. They should go about it the way Sony and Microsoft do with their systems–implementing it WITHIN the console. The Switch 2 seems absolutely promising, but if Nintendo still uses this application for the next-gen console, online play won’t go far at all for Nintendo.”- Mr. Phonz
I can only hope they eventually streamline everything into one app. For example, with the advent of Game Chat for the Nintendo Switch 2, this will render to voice chat in the Nintendo Switch app obsolete. You can divide type of access depending on the player’s online membership status. In summary, streamlining and focusing on quality will likely improve customer satisfaction.
Do you have and use any of these Nintendo apps? What are your thoughts on them?
