Atari announced they will acquire an 82% majority stake in Swedish video game holdings company Thunderful Group, the parent company of Thunderful Games, for roughly $5 million USD according to a report from Video Games Chronicle.
The deal is contingent on shareholder approval, with a vote scheduled to take place August 28. According to Atari, the acquisition already has the full backing of Thunderful’s Board of Directors, along with key shareholders Owe Bergsten and Brjann Sigurgeirsson, who together control nearly 30% of the company’s voting power.
Atari CEO Wade Rosen called the move a key milestone in the company’s expansion, particularly in the European market. “Thunderful is known for producing high-quality, critically acclaimed games,” Rosen said, expressing confidence in the company’s ability to grow. Thunderful operates multiple studios across Sweden and owns publishing labels Thunderful Publishing and Rising Star Games. Its catalog includes well-regarded titles such as the SteamWorld series, Lost in Random, and Viewfinder.
This is just one of several moves by Atari in recent years as it continues to reestablish its relevance in the industry. The company’s resurgence has been compelling to watch, driven by a clear strategy to strengthen its development and publishing capabilities. There previous acquisitions like Digital Eclipse, Nightdive Studios, Intellivision, and MobyGames have been incredibly strong for the company. Thunderful, on the other hand, has struggled with financial challenges, including mass layoffs in 2023.
With this deal, Atari aims to stabilize Thunderful while generating long-term value for both companies.
