I spoke with the primary developer, Scott Smith, who spent almost seven years working on the Spirit of Midnight. He told me that he grew up with and loved Lucasart point-and-click adventure games like The Secret of Monkey Island and Grim Fandango, and so he wanted to create a game with the same spirit but with modern sensibilities such as a hint system and optimization for controller use.
Scott initially started off at a design firm, which assigned him very intense and condense projects. Over time, burnout loomed over him, so he decided to apply his skills to entertainment. That’s when he started his journey with night classes. The developer honed his craft with his love of illustration and vector art, and now he is less than six months away from Spirit of Midnight‘s release.
Spirit of Midnight will take approximately five to six hours to beat. Each scene has been carefully crafted over the years, with only some final touches in dialogue and hooking up of puzzles left to do.
During my playthrough of the demo, the music was a standout. Brendon Williams (Destiny 2: Forsaken, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate) and Bryan Atkinson (Guild Wars 2) were the games’ composers. The sweeping, whimsical instrumentals carried me through this experience as this talking cat explored the woods. The characters and dialogue were endearing, and the art style was charming. The level of difficulty for the puzzles felt fair, and the hint system was a lever to pull only when needed. Overall, Spirit of Midnight was fun to play, adorable to look at, and a top-tier indie experience. I’m looking forward to playing the full title in March 2027.

Until then, if this game sounds like it’s up your alley, be sure to wish list it on Steam.
