The Marvel Cinematic Universe has hit Disney+ with its latest limited series: Loki. Our favorite devious brother is back, and this time we are looking at the events that transpired after Loki took the Tesseract in Avengers Endgame. Each week Boss Rush Entertainment will provide a short review that includes a synopsis of the episode and general thoughts about the episode.
Synopsis: “Glorious Purpose“
Loki begins with a scene from Avengers Endgame where the Avengers time-traveled back to 2009 and the Battle of New York; Loki is seen using the Tesseract to create a portal and escape from captivity. Loki is arrested by the Time Variance Authority (or TVA for short) for breaking the current timeline. Loki learns that years ago there was a multi-verse war where different timelines battled each other for supremacy, but the Timekeepers created peace and created the TVA to make sure the timelines stayed intact. Loki stands trial in the court of the TVA and as he is sentenced, Mobius (played by Owen Wilson) asks the judge to give him custody of the God of Mischief.
Mobius needs Loki’s help to take down an enemy that hasn’t been fully shown or discussed, but first he needs Loki to look within himself and discover some inner truths. Mobius shows him different moments from the past where Loki failed; he then shows Loki what would happen if he had stayed in his timeline and how Thanos would eventually kill Loki.
Loki escapes when Mobius is called away. After he explores the TVA, Loki returns to the room where Mobius showed him his past and future. He uses a device to see how he would eventually be the reason his mother Frigga died. Loki finally agrees to help Mobius, and the episode ends with our first look at the newest villain of the MCU.
Breakdown:
Marvel has been on fire this year with their limited-time series on Disney+; Loki looks like an absolute gem of a show. I was pleasantly shocked at how great Owen Wilson is as Mobius. Mobius is a really interesting character as he toes the line between detective and therapist in this first episode. As fans, we have seen a lot of different sides to Loki, but this first episode is basically a therapy session for Loki, showing him in a new light. I think a telling moment is when Loki sees how he caused Frigga’s death; it is a simple moment when Loki realizes the gravity of his actions. I absolutely adore this first episode, and I can’t wait to see what else Marvel has in store for us with Loki!
