Boss Rush Banter: Will Pokemon Scarlet and Violet Be Different Enough from Previous Iterations?

Early morning on June 1st, The Pokemon Company released a new trailer for Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet, revealing lots of new information including a release date of November 18th, 2022.

The trailer introduced different professors for each game, a multi-player system to play with up to four friends, new and familiar Pokemon, and two new Legendary Pokemon. It also showed off a little more of its open-world concept, something not new to the industry, but certainly new to this franchise. Pokemon has been around for over 25 years, and there are a plethora of games that have been released since 1996. While new generations of Pokemon themselves are introduced, the gameplay remained the same: pick a starter, travel and capture Pokemon, and defeat gym leaders. Pokemon Arceus was the first game to really shake things up (mobile games excluded) in early 2022 with a more spacious setting and different goal of researching than collecting gym badges. If The Pokemon Company and Nintendo want to enjoy another 25 years of Pokemon fever, they need to keep this franchise fresh–and the question is, will Pokemon Scarlet and Violet achieve this?

Although we do not know everything about Scarlet and Violet, the new trailer and website touts an “evolved” take on traditional gameplay.

Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet are the first open-world RPGs in the Pokémon series. As you enjoy the hallmarks of the series—meeting, teaming up with, battling, training, and trading Pokémon—you’ll be able to immerse yourself in a newly evolved adventure.

From what I see so far, I believe that Pokemon Scarlet and Violet took some notes from the success of Pokemon Arceus and blended it with the traditional Pokemon structure. I believe that if this is true, the games will be successful and launch the franchise into another long-stretch of success.
