Boss Rush Banter: What Are Your Favorite Kirby Copy Abilities?

Kirby, an unassuming powerhouse for Nintendo, celebrates 30 years this year. A fresh new title, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, released in March 2022, and Kirby’s Dream Buffet dropped in August. That’s not all, Kirby’s Return to Dreamland was announced at a recent Direct for the Switch in February 2023.

That’s a lot of Kirby.

Although Kirby tends to be a take or leave it kind of franchise, there’s something fun about this pink puffball and his penchant for swallowing everything in his path. Of course, the hook is the ability to copy powers of enemies he ingests. With several copy abilities, there are a plethora of ways to tackle a level. If you’ve played a Kirby game, what are some of your favorite copy abilities? Here are some of mine below, and I will describe them based off the my recent play-through of Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

Fire

I’m all about firepower, pardon the pun. I love abilities that are powerful and straight-forward. Fire is OP in my opinion, and when its upgraded to Dragon Fire in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, I can take down bosses and mini-bosses in seconds.

Needle

The needle ability can be unassuming, but this grew on me. Once I upgraded it to the Clutter Needle, I chose that ability more often, as I was able to tack on enemies and hurl them at others. It also felt like a protective barrier as I moved about. Win-win.

Ranger

Need I say more? Shoot enemies from afar. When upgraded in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, you can charge up and even lock on. Not the best for close contact, but Ranger is an ol’ reliable.

What are some of your favorite Kirby copy abilities? I hope that future iterations of Kirby will involve combos, much like in Kirby 64: the Crystal Shards. Please share your thoughts with us on our Boss Rush Facebook Group or our Boss Rush Discord.
