Release Date set for Koei Tecmo’s Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse Remake

Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse has a release date.

The remastered classic Japanese horror adventure will release digitally March 9, 2023, Koei Tecmo recently announced. The release is set for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One and Series X/S, and PC via Steam.

Koei Tecmo also revealed a deluxe edition of the game, which includes the Rogetsu Isle Dinner Party costume set and a digital art book.

This game is a remaster of the original by the same name which Koei Tecmo released on the Wii in 2008 in Japan. It never saw a release outside of Japan.

Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse takes place on a remote island in southern Japan where five young girls mysteriously vanished during the festival of Rogetsu Kagura. All girls were found but their memories were gone except for one who could only remember a melody.

Ten years later, two of the girls mysteriously died, prompting the other three to return to the island to get some answers as to why their friends died and what happened 10 years ago.

The three teenagers who return to the island are Ruka Minazuki, Misaki Aso, and Madoka Tsukimora. Choshiro Kirishima is the detective who found the girls.

Fans who get this game by March 22, 2023 can also get bonus perks including Ruka exclusive costume Marie Rose outfit from the Dead or Alive series.

Those who preorder the game can also get a host of costumes. These include Ruka limited edition costume Fox Mask (white/red); Misaki limited edition costume Fox Mask (black/red); and Choshiro limited edition costume Fox Mask (black/blue).

Additionally, those who preorder will get the limited edition costume Spirit Stone Flashlight Hat for Ruka, Misaki, and Choshiro.

Those who have played Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water will get a special save bonus costume called Camera Obscura Hat. This will be for Ruka, Misaki, and Choshiro.

The Fatal Frame series consists of five mainline games and two spinoffs. Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is the only mainline game not to make it to North America while Project Zero 2 Wii Edition, a remake of the second game Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, made it to Japan, Europe, and Australia only.

The first three games originally released on the PlayStation 2 while the fifth game — Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water — was originally exclusive to the Wii U. The first three games eventually made it to the original Xbox while the fifth game made the jump to all current consoles as well as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

It’s always exciting to see a game that was exclusive to one region make a debut in others. This will always give newcomers more of a chance to dip their toes into the franchise, which is always a good thing.
