A new clip and behind-the-scenes video for Willow, an upcoming Disney Plus series, recently dropped, providing fans another preview of the sequel TV show.
Willow, which is slated to release on Nov. 30, is a follow-up to the 1988 fantasy movie of the same name. Lucasfilm is behind the production as George Lucas originally conceived the idea. The series returns fans to the magical world but incorporates “modern sensibilities,” according to the synopsis.
The clip features a group of travelers meeting with the eponymous sorcerer Willow (Warwick Davis). Kit (Ruby Cruz) seeks the aid of Willow to help her save her twin brother Airk (Dempsey Bryk). Kit is the daughter of Lady Sorsha (Joanne Whalley).
Willow not only showcases his cunning side by using a decoy upon the initial meeting, but also flexes his knowledge and foresight of the situation. The sorcerer also says Kit reminds her of his mother, who he teamed up with in the original movie.
Willow not only puts Kit’s mind at ease regarding her brother but he also lays out what their quest will look like, setting the stage for a grand adventure. He informs the group they will need to travel beyond the Shattered Sea, which is the edge of maps in this world.
The behind the scenes video also featured some clips from the series, but focused on commentary from the cast and crew. Davis and Executive Producer Ron Howard, who directed the 1988 movie, feature heavily in this preview.
The messages center on the importance of returning to this world and the theme of a hero coming from anywhere.
Willow features a bit of a dream team when it comes to its production as Jonathan Kasdan, Wendy Mericle, Michelle Rejwan, and Kathleen Kennedy join Howard as executive producers.
This series takes place 20 years after the events of the original movie. The plot of the original movie centered on Willow being a young farmer who set out on a journey to protect a special baby from the evil queen.
Davis and Whalley were both in the original film while Val Kilmer played a mercenary named Madmartigan. Kilmer is not slated to return because of his battle with throat cancer, but Davis has said Madmartigan will play a big part in the show regardless.
If there’s one skill Disney has mastered over the years, it’s how to create hype for a show, no matter how big or small. These two clips do a fantastic job at creating intrigue for the upcoming Disney Plus series.
There’s always a balancing act when it comes to returning to a decades-old franchise as you have to appease long-time fans while appealing to newcomers. These clips appear to blend the two together to create hype among both groups.
I fit into the newcomers group and am really intrigued at what this show has to offer. This is all because of these two clips.
The release of this show also fits well into a crowded fantasy landscape as both The Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power and House of the Dragon just finished up. Willow now has a space all to its own to keep quenching that fantasy thirst, especially at what appears to be a family-friendly level.
