Let me start this article by saying that I’ve been playing Pokémon games for over two decades. Pokémon Yellow was one of the first games I played and I’ve played every generation since and most of the spin-offs to boot.
When I heard about the DLC’s for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, I was excited. Unlike a lot of players, I didn’t run across nearly as many technical issues as others did and I found the story to be engaging and enjoyable.
Plus, as a massive fan of Pokémon Legends Arecus, I loved the new play style coming into a main line game.
Pokémon Scarlet or Violet The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero was announced and I was thrilled. A two-part adventure set in this world, with these characters, continuing the story I’d greatly enjoyed.
Except, that’s not what it delivered.
Pokémon Scarlet or Violet The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero Part 1: The Teal Mask delivered a very disappointing experience on many levels.
The most benign reason being that it removed you from the ensemble cast you’d grown to love in the main game only to throw you with new characters for the much shorter DLC.
But that was minor compared to the darker aspects that were hidden within the first part. For the first time in my history of playing Pokémon games, I found myself uncomfortable.
While playing, you are forced into assisting to gaslight an NPC in order to move the plot into the second party. You are not given the option to not participate in this.
For me, this already overly expensive DLC needed to not be attached to shortcomings such as this. As it stands on the basis of Part 1, it is not worth the $35 USD that it costs.
As someone who loves the Pokémon franchise, I truly hope that they can overcome the shortcomings of the first part. I hope that there is justice for Kieran before the conclusion of The Indigo Disk.
