Monochrome Heights Devlog #17 – Time for Some Fun

2–3 minutes

I’m making Monochrome Heights, a challenging 2D platformer . It’s got a phase mechanic where players have to swap between black and white to land on platforms and avoid obstacles. I’m hoping to release the game later this year.

For the past few months, in trying to make substantial progress on Monochrome Heights, I’ve forced myself to focus on the harder and less enjoyable parts of the project. There are certain things I find really easy to do in game development, like level design, prototyping mechanics, and writing. On the flip side, there are plenty more things I don’t quite have the same enthusiasm for.

In order to finish the game, I need to push myself to accomplish a lot of tasks that are challenging, frustrating, or boring. After several months of working on such elements, I decided recently that I needed to make a level. It was refreshing, and flowed much more easily than my struggles with UI or coding the save system.

I’m not claiming that I make great levels easily, but rather that I can get in a flow state and find a lot of fun in that aspect of making Monochrome Heights. And I realized that balancing this fun with the other harder work, is probably a goal to shoot for.

I haven’t exactly mastered that balance. For now I’ve given myself permission to focus on building levels and polishing old levels. Ultimately, all of the work will have to get done, and mixing up a bit of fun with a bit of challenge right now is the way forward for me.

I can’t wait to share these levels with you, and if you can’t wait to try a few, make sure and check out the demo and wishlist the game on Steam.
