Final Fantasy has always been a fun series that has evolved drastically over time. One of my first games on the SNES was Final Fantasy II which is, Final Fantasy IV in Japan. Since then, it has been rectified here in the states. So, when Square Enix released a physical copy in 2022 for Switch and PS4 I really thought about buying it, only being held back by the price, especially since I own all of them on other consoles and handhelds.
I decided to pass on the standard and the special edition from Square Enix and as time past the PS4 version started to no longer be available for purchase. Another option was to purchase the Playasia version which was multi-language and had a different variant of the art inside the box as well as the cartridge. Though I wanted to purchase them, it seemed costly in my opinion.
Fast forward to August 2024 when Square Enix announced an Anniversary edition of the Final Fantasy Pixel Remastered game. Releasing the game for 74.99 US dollars with a sticker sheet. I was shocked that they decided to do a second run of this game, but money always is a great motivator to companies. So shortly after this announcement I received an email from Playasia that dropped the price of their version from 79.99 US dollars that originally did not include free shipping was listed at 49.99 US dollars with free shipping. My question is does this coincide with Square Enix’s new release and is this helping or hindering them?
What is Square Enix’s strategy and is the next version of this game just come only with a sticker sheet? The Game Boy Advanced versions had additional content, such as additional jobs for the characters, that were not represented on the Pixel Remaster edition from 2022, but I’m assuming the new Anniversary edition may include these on the second run from Square Enix which is releasing October of 2024. If it doesn’t why would you not buy the 49.99 Playasia version over the Anniversary Edition?
I’m not sure if Playasia is working collaboratively on this with Square Enix or if Playasia is trying to undercut them to make a profit before the new release of the titles? Either way, will you be purchasing any of these versions? If so which one? Have you played any of the first six games before? What is your favorite Final Fantasy game? Let us know your thoughts on this situation.
