Boss Rush Banter: Wuthering Waves Needs to Fix This One Issue

With the recent release of the 1.4 update of Wuthering Waves, it has become apparent that the story has fallen into the habit of having each character’s backstory revolve around Rover. While Rover is the main character and the story is centered around them, it has created a glaring issue in the storytelling. If you remove Rover from the equation, there is nothing for the story to stand on. While you could argue that the main conflicts in each nation would exist without Rover’s influence, it has slowly become apparent that everything in Solaris-3 is somehow linked to Rover.

Within the past two updates, the two released five-star characters have backstories linked heavily to Rover. Shorekeeper, released in the last update, was revealed to have been created by Rover. Then, in the most recent update, it was revealed that Camellya had known Rover in her past. How exactly, I will let you discover while playing the game. But Camlleya’s past connection has created an unhealthy obsession with Rover.

This, in itself, is not entirely an issue. However, there is a distinct lack of character interactions and moments outside of Rover. In the character menus, there are voicelines that each character has about other characters. For most of the characters, this is the only indication that they are friends with or hang out with the other characters outside of Rover. Even in the new event, the characters don’t really interact with each other. In the scene captured above, all the lines were framed towards Rover and the player instead of each other. Not a single one of the characters are looking at or speaking to each other.

Of course, there are some exceptions to this. Encore and Aalto are two characters that interact with each other outside of Rover. These interactions provide more depth to the story, providing another view of the world and characters. Additionally, Mortefi and Baizhi are co-workers who have some lines with each other. However, Xiangli Yao does not have any interactions with Mortefi and Baizhi outside of his character voicelines. This is despite the fact that he is also one of their co-workers. Baizhi, YangYang, and Chixia are the three characters that Rover is first introduced to and they interact with each other often. Despite these interactions being in the game, they are all limited to the first couple quests. Outside of these, there have been extremely limited character to character interactions. This leaves the story without depth and also prevents newer characters from meshing nicely into the overall story. The new characters are rarely ever hinted to in the story and come out of nowhere, making it difficult for players to get hyped up for them.

What do you think? Is this an issue that Kuro Games should prioritize fixing? Should the characters have more interactions outside of Rover? Let us know in the comments below or join the Boss Rush Discord to further the conversation!
