This week, Bloody Disgusting reported that Alien: Earth will be coming to SXSW in Austin, Texas. The announcement detailed how the exhibit will be sprawling and interactive, with visitors having the opportunity to be scanned for “alien parasites,” being given crew credentials, and taking on a mission to comb through the wreckage of a crashed ship.
The news is consistent with the recent push by Disney to go all in on their support of the Alien franchise, having spared no expense with the lead-up to Alien: Romulus in 2024. Noah Hawley, the writer and director for the upcoming FX series, set to release in the summer, has earned a reputation within the industry as someone capable of handling big-time franchises and finding the right story to tell.
The fact that events like the one at SXSW are happening suggests that Disney knows they have something good in Alien: Earth, and that fans might be in for something special. As a lifelong fan of the franchise, I’m really hoping this promotion will get the fires burning for those skeptical up to this point. While we’ve had some fantastic films, and incredible additions in the Expanded Universe, we have yet to enjoy an Alien story told in long form, over a multi-season story arc. If Hawley can pull this off, the golden age of Alien fandom might truly have returned.
