Ahead of Tuesday’s Nintendo Direct, Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to declare that a release date has been set for the next installment in the Super Mario Bros. film franchise by Illumination.
Writing in Japanese on the official Nintendo account on X, Miyamoto states (as translated by Google):
Hello, this is Miyamoto. We will be broadcasting a Nintendo Direct tonight, but before that I would like to make an announcement. The release date for the new Super Mario animated movie in Japan has been set for April 24, 2026. We are working with the Illumination team to make it a fun movie, so please continue to look forward to it.
The first installment released last year on April 05, 2023, which lines up well with the second movie’s planned launch.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a massive success for Nintendo and Illumination. The film starred Chris Pratt as the eponymous hero, and featured Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor Joy as Princess Peach, and Jack Black as the villainous Bowser.
Details on the sequel are scarce, but the film is expected to heavily focus on Yoshi, Mario’s dinosaur sidekick, due to the final scene shown during the original movie’s credits.
What would you like to see in the second Super Mario Bros. Movie? Would you like to see Jack Black return as Bowser, or a new villain take the helm, such as Wario or the Koopalings? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below, and follow us on our social media platforms!
