As part of Disney’s D23 2022 Expo, Disney & Marvel unveiled a slew of new video gaming content to satisfy hungry fans. This is the first year that Disney has included a separate conference for just video games at D23, which is running from September 9th-11th.

For those that may have missed these gaming announcements, fret not: you can catch a video of the entire showcase below, or read our summary of each and every reveal. Let’s get started!

Tron Identity

The first new game unveiled to audiences was a visual novel based on the Tron franchise. Titled Tron: Identity, the game follows a detective named Query who is “tasked with solving the mystery of an unprecedented crime.” This cyberpunk adventure is coming from developer Bithell Games, the minds behind Thomas Was Alone and John Wick Hex, and we can expect it to hit PC and Consoles in 2023.

Illusion Island

Illusion Island is the latest Mickey Mouse 2D platformer that’s coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch in 2023. The game stars Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy in an adventure to “explore the mysterious islands of Monoth and recover three mystical books to save the world from disaster.” The game’s art style borrows from the more recent Mickey Mouse short cartoons, while gameplay seems very reminiscent of other stellar Nintendo platformers such as Super Mario 3D World, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, and New Super Mario Bros. U. It’s exciting to see the Mouse return to form, as many of his classic gaming adventures such as World of Illusion and Magical Quest are among the best of their era. What’s more is that the game can be enjoyed with up to four simultaneous players gaming together either via local split-screen or online co-op!

Midnight Suns Gets New Release Date

Last August during Gamescom, Disney first announced Marvel’s Midnight Suns, a card-based strategy RPG from the brilliant creators of X-Com. The game takes a darker approach than most other Marvel related media, and features heroes such as Ghost Rider, Wolverine, Venom, and Blade taking on demons from the underworld. Unfortunately, earlier this year the game was put on an indefinite hold. Now, Disney is confirming that the game will release on December 2nd, 2022 for XBox Series X\S, PS5, and PC; a Switch version is still in the works, but Xbox One and PS4 ports of the game have been canceled. Fans can catch prequel shorts detailing the backstory of the game starting on October 31st!

Red Hulk to Join Marvel Strike Force

Marvel’s free-to-play squad-based RPG Marvel Strike Force will be adding the iconic Red Hulk to the game’s roster. Players can add him to their team on September 13th after completing a campaign centered around Apocalypse and his “newest Horseman of War.”

Marvel Snap

A new free-to-play collectible card game titled Marvel Snap will arrive on mobile and PC on October 18, 2022. The game promises to include more than 150 Marvel super heroes and villains, and let players duke it out either against each other online, or in a single player story mode. Gamers can pre-register right now, and get a jumpstart in building their own deck of Marvel legends.

Aliens: Dark Descent Gameplay Trailer

It’s easy to forget that the iconic Aliens franchise is now a Disney property, but indeed the House of Mouse acquired Aliens and plenty more when they acquired Fox in 2019. Aliens: Dark Descent was first announced during this year’s Summer Game Fest, and now we get a first look at the game play of this squad-based, top-down shooter. Players can expect to team up and slay countless Xenomorphs when it launches on PC and Consoles next year.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Another property Disney received from their Fox acquisition is James Cameron’s Avatar series. Ubisoft revealed a new game–originally set to coincide with the second movie–last summer, which promises to let players control both humans and na’vi in an open world battle for the planet of Pandora. Disney provided a very brief developer update, but stopped short of confirming a release date.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Galactic Edition

Earlier this year, LEGO released a game compiling all nine of the core Star Wars films in the form of The Skywalker Saga. Disney announced a new “Galactic Edition” for the hit game, which will bring 13 character packs, and includes such favorites as Cassian Andor, Reva, and Captain Rex. Players can expand their LEGO collection on November 1st.

Return to Monkey Island

The sixth entry to the acclaimed Lucas Arts classic Monkey Island franchise was first unveiled earlier this year, and Disney has provided a new trailer of the adventure title just before its launch date on September 19th.

Gargoyles Remaster

Disney has been releasing in recent years remasters of many of their classic games including The Jungle Book, Aladdin, and The Lion King. The next game to get the updated treatment is Gargoyles: an action platformer first released exclusively for the Sega Genesis/Master System in 1995. Though no release date is given, the game will include improved visuals and controls when it releases for PC and modern consoles.

Disney Mirrorverse Halloween Season

Disney Mirrorverse is a free-to-play mobile RPG that allows players to use iconic Disney characters in a unique story set outside of Disney canon. A trailer for the game’s upcoming Halloween season of events reveals that villains such as Ursula and Hades, as well as characters from The Nightmare Before Christmas, will be the stars when the season hits this October.

Disney Speedstorm Monster’s Inc. Content

A trailer for the upcoming Disney racing title shows that content from the acclaimed Pixar series Monster’s Inc. will be included. Players can take to the track as Sulley, Mike Wazowski, Celia Mae, and Randall, as well as fight for first place in a series inspired track called “The Factory.” A release date is not currently known, but Disney has confirmed it is coming “soon.”

Disney Dreamlight Valley Toy Story Realm

The recently released Disney Dreamlight Valley has players living in a world inhabited by Disney characters from across the ages. A new trailer shows that a realm based on Toy Story will be arriving soon, bringing Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and other new content to the hit life-sim game.

Avatar: Reckoning

Another game based on the Avatar franchise is also on the way in the form of Avatar: Reckoning. The game is a free-to-play mobile MMORPG. Disney promises the title will include numerous different game modes to keep gameplay fresh, and allow gamers to fully customize their own Avatar to explore Pandora with. The game will be arriving sometime in the near future.

Skydance New Media Unnamed Captain America/Black Panther Project

Fans were treated to a surprise trailer for an upcoming game from Skydance New Media, a developer helmed by industry veteran Amy Hennig (Uncharted, The Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver). The unnamed project features Captain America and Black Panther during World War II, and allow players to globetrot to locations such as Paris and Wakanda.

Marvel World of Heroes

Marvel is entering the AR gaming market with Marvel World of Heroes. The title comes from Niantic, the creators of Pokémon GO, and will allow gamers to craft their own superhero and team up with their favorites from the Marvel universe in the real world. Interested players can pre-register at the game’s website, and get updates before it launches on mobile devices in 2023.

For those expecting updates on Spider-Man 2, Wolverine, or even Kingdom Hearts 4, the conference may have been disappointing, but there’s still plenty for fans of Disney and Marvel properties to be excited for.
